Food & Eating
At Newland House we are very proud of our ability to provide good, wholesome home-cooked food in a quantity and quality which can be enjoyed by all.
Ingredients are sourced locally with fruit, vegetables, meat and dry goods delivered daily; there is very little reliance upon the deep freeze.
Friends and relatives are always welcome to join us for meals and beverages, at no extra charge.
Breakfast
At a very flexible breakfast time we serve: fruit juices, cereals or porridge, yoghurts, eggs, bacon, kippers, toast and marmalade, tea, coffee or other drink of choice.
Elevenses
Elevenses are celebrated traditionally with tea or coffee, served with a homemade shortbread or biscuit.
Lunch
Lunch is the main meal of the day and served at 12.30, usually in the dining room although Residents may choose to eat in their own room or in the activity room. Sherry is offered as an aperitif, whilst wine can be taken with meals.
We plan a four week menu rotation in consultation with Residents, and we regularly add or delete dishes according to their likes and dislikes. You can see the current week's menu in full.
The first course comes from a choice of homemade soup of the day, melon, grapefruit or prawn cocktail.
Main courses are based on traditional principles of home-cooking. We're very, very good at producing Sunday roasts of beef, chicken, lamb and pork, and as it seems to be everyone's favourite we alternate the meat for a mid-week roast too.
Always enjoyed are our casseroles; tasty and slowly cooked beef and ale, chicken and mushroom, rabbit with prunes in cider, Lancashire hot-pot, liver and bacon, and mince with savoury dumplings. Suet dumplings in the mince are something to be fought over!
Occasionally, Maria and Donna will indulge us with a good old fashioned steak and kidney suet pudding, steamed for hours and hours, or a ham and Leek suet roly-poly.
Of course, alternatives are available on request, perhaps a salad or something light.
Desserts are wonderful, as they should be when you've really had enough to eat! Every day the trolley is laden with sweet temptations: fruit jellies, trifles, mousses and ice-creams. When "some like it hot", Maria bakes: rice pudding, sponges with custard, semolina and sago, fruit pies, and ever-so-gooey gateaux.
Afternoon Tea
4 o'clock is tea-time, and sees yet more delights to encourage the "I can't eat like I used to" palates. Home-made cakes, scones, biscuits and teacakes are served in the lounge, in the garden or in the bistro area. Our afternoon tea ceremony seems to attract a growing number of family, friends and visitors who are extremely welcome to take part.
Supper
Supper-time is between 6-ish and 8-ish. Our Residents are offered a light cooked meal from jacket potatoes, welsh rarebit, macaroni cheese, various sandwiches or homemade soup; substantial enough to last until breakfast, though not quite the feast served at lunchtime.
Bedtime Drinks
When the night staff arrive, they are happy to offer a bedtime hot drink of choice: hot milk, Horlicks, Ovaltine or hot chocolate.
Special Diets
On top of all this, our superb cooks are also able to provide meals for special diets such as gluten-free, diabetic, vegetarian, and high or low protein or fats.
